King Philip’s War, also known as the First Indian War, has been described by one historian as the “single greatest calamity” in Puritan New England, The three-year conflict, which pitted the English settlers against the five major tribes of the region, was not limited in scope, and over half the 110 settlements of New England (including Simsbury) were attacked. The war destroyed the economies of Connecticut and Rhode Island, and set the stage for the major wars of the eighteenth century, including the French and Indian War and the American Revolution.
